Tasmanian Prison Service Remand to Work Pilot Evaluation

We evaluated a Tasmanian Prison Service pilot supporting Indigenous reintegration, uncovering key insights to strengthen future transition-to-work programs.

Context

The evaluation of the Tasmanian Prison Service (TPS) Remand Prison to Work Pilot focused on the role of the Indigenous Remand and Reintegration Officer, the objective of which was to provide individualised support to Indigenous participants to successfully transition from prison into the community and be better positioned to participate in the labour force and to gain sustainable employment.

Approach

Arcadia Social Research reviewed over 100 de-identified case files, including structuring a framework to streamline the way engagements and outcomes were counted and compared, and conducted in-depth interviews with key stakeholders involved in the implementation of the program.

Result

The evaluation revealed the depth and diversity of support delivered, both within the original program scope and outside of it. The key challenges of delivering a reintegration program were highlighted and key learnings detailed, as well as recommendations for how future roles, similar to the IRRO, may be deployed successfully.
